Salt, Boats & the Erie Canal

Presentation by Donna Scott

Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at 7 p.m.

Lansing Town Hall

29 Auburn Road, Lansing

Free and open to the public

About the presentation:

Salt has been harvested in this area for hundreds of years. For decades, it was transported to market by boats on lakes, rivers and the Erie Canal. Boat-building companies in Ithaca and other cities thrived by serving this important industry. What do we know about salt transport in this region? How did the Erie Canal compete with railroads and trucks?  This presentation, with many archival photos and documents, is based on extensive research by Ms. Scott and others into this important era of Finger Lakes history.
